The Merkato Ethiopian project, conceived by the Equity and Policy Development Group at the City of Portland – Bureau of Development Services, stands as a heartfelt tribute to community and heritage. Born out of the need to support Yadi’s community during the difficult times of Covid, this web project serves as a digital gathering place where individuals can embrace their rich traditions, celebrate their shared identity, and offer one another unwavering support. It reflects a commitment to nurturing bonds that have always been the cornerstone of cultural heritage, providing a warm, inclusive environment for dialogue and connection.
Designed with both passion and precision, I built the site using Javascript, jQuery, Bootstrap 3, and Animate.css to create an engaging, responsive experience. Beyond fostering community connections, the website also offers practical features like fresh food orders and spice delivery services, allowing users to access traditional African meals and ingredients with ease. This project is a testament to the power of digital innovation in preserving culture and building resilient communities, ensuring that even in challenging times, the spirit of togetherness and celebration remains strong.
